1
Start the Clocks
Set up the two passive tests and start the timers
14. Biomass & 15. F:B Ratio — Whisk the soil sample in the microBIOMETER extraction fluid and set aside to settle.
7. Slake Test — Drop the soil clump into the jar of water and start the timer.
2
The Walkabout
Walk the zone and run the hands-on field tests while the timers run
⏰
Timer Alert (5–10 min) — Return to the jar and log the Slake Test result.
3
Dig & Inspect
Dig the main soil pit and observe
4
Plant & Root
Inspect roots and plants from the soil pit
⏰
Timer Alert (20 min) — The microBIOMETER solution has settled. Drop the fluid onto the test card, scan with the app, and log the results.
5
Slurry & Chemistry
Wrap up with the final quick chemistry checks
3. Penetrometer / Compaction
Tier 1
Take multiple push readings across the walking path.
4. Infiltration Rate
Tier 1
Hammer the ring, pour water, and record the level every minute for ~5 minutes.
5. Soil EC (Electrical Conductivity)
Tier 1
Take the EC probe reading from the same slurry.
Log the aggregate stability after the settling period.
Smell the soil immediately upon opening the pit.
10. Nodulation of Legumes
Tier 3
Slice the nodules to check for active pink/red status.
Inspect roots for clinging soil.
12. Soil Insect Score
Tier 3
Log insect diversity from the sorted soil tray.
13. Soil Colour (Munsell)
Tier 3
Enter the Munsell notation from a colour app, or select a broad category below.
14. Biomass (microBIOMETER)
Tier 4
Log the microbial biomass reading from the microBIOMETER app.
15. F:B Ratio (microBIOMETER)
Tier 4
Log the fungal-to-bacterial ratio from the microBIOMETER app.
16. Brix Barometer
Tier 4
Squeeze sap from the plant material and read the refractometer.
